The Savage is a noisy bike. Single cylinder engines seem to be that way. One thing to check is that your automatic decompression system is working properly. You will see a cable near the spark plug going to a soilenoid under the tank. What this does is unload compression from the cylender to make the engine easier to start and prevents it from rolling back. My recomendation is get a clymer manual and find someone experienced to check it out.
